Interview

My name is Carl, I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after YouTube started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Wacky Wood Works: We love hearing the stories of working with grandfathers in the wood shop…

Stats: I’ve been a professional woodturner for 4 years.

Shop size: My shop is 18′ by 24′
The space was built as a paint shop, and conferred into a wood shop later.

How long have you been woodworking?
I’ve been a woodworker since I was old enough to walk into my grandpa’s shop. I started woodturning 22 years ago.

Can you remember your first project and what was it?
My first turning project was a small bowl.

What made you decide to start producing online content?
I looked online on how to make a duck call and couldn’t find anything. I decided to make a video myself to show others how to do it.

Do you only do woodworking or do you work with any other materials?
I mostly work with wood, but I love playing around with other materials like automotive paint.

Wacky Wood Works: Turning automotive paint is something we had never seen till we saw it on your channel, other things that can be fun to turn plastics

What is your favorite project you have made so far and why?
I think my favorite project would be the cryptex. I really enjoyed working through the process to make it work.

Do you have a favorite tool, if so what is it and why?
The lathe is my favorite tool. I love the fact that you can start with a raw piece of wood, and an hour later have a finished project.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get inspiration from other woodworks/woodturners.

What do you have coming up in the near future?
I’m putting together a video of the Oregon Symposium I attended, where I met some great people. I’m also working on a collaboration video with one of the presenters Lyle Jamieson.

What advice would you give someone that may want to start making things?
Work through the mistakes… they are creative design changes.

Fun Fact
My most asked question… “What’s in the can?” lol It’s Paste wax and Mineral oil.

Thanks for doing this, and thanks for promoting the community.
